Katie & Lâm’s wedding | Flor de Cabrera – North Coast Dominican Republic
Lâm and Katie are both from Virginia. One is from northern Virginia while the other is from central Virginia. They both crossed paths in Richmond, VA during the fall of 2008. His best friend and best man, Han, attended Virginia Commonwealth University with Katie during that time. One hot summer day in August, Han, urged Lam to accompany him to this event called Salsa on the Plaza. It was a welcome back event for new and returning students and he thought this would be a great way to introduce the University to Lâm. This was Lâm’s first time setting foot on the University’s campus and he was hesitant to go especially since he did not know how to dance to Latin songs. Han, nonetheless, convinced him with the promise of meeting beautiful Latinas… guess he wasn’t wrong there 😉
Katie was immediately star struck the moment her friend Han introduced Lâm to her. They shook hands and she couldn’t help but, gush over Lam’s radiant smile. Meeting Lam was like a breath of fresh air and she knew right then and there he was special and unlike the rest. That was the start of a beautiful friendship. A friendship that played a key role in Lâm’s decision to transfer to VCU from community college later that semester.
That friendship then blossomed into something more and on December 14, 2008 Lâm got down on one knee in front of the city’s biggest Christmas tree to ask Katie if they could be more than just friends. Right at that moment Katie thought… how would he propose then… with both knees on the ground haha. Oh yes she knew he was the one from the start 😉
Fast forward exactly 5 years later and you find the couple celebrating their 5-year anniversary at the Rockefeller Center in New York City. Christmas has always been a magical time of the year for Katie so Lâm surprised her with a trip to New York City to visit one of the biggest Christmas trees on the East Coast. It was a cold, brisk, snowy evening on December 14, 2013 when Lâm and Katie finally approached a line to take pictures with the tree. They were next in line when suddenly everyone erupted in cheers. The couple right in front of them just got engaged. It seemed Lam had the right idea but he couldn’t help but feel that the couple stole his thunder. Lâm and Katie were next and took pictures like a normal. When done, Lâm told Katie he didn’t like that angle of the tree and wanted to take pictures from a different side. Katie followed along hurriedly while still mesmerized by tree. Once more they got in line and this time the view was a whole lot different. Instead of being up close to the tree, where they were standing had a view of the entire 76 ft tree. It even had a view of angels with trumpets What a view and that is when Lâm knew that was the spot. When it was their turn again, Lam got down on one knee (not two lol) to propose. Katie couldn’t believe what was happening. She remembers hearing Lâm say, I would love to grow old with you… But after that everything became blurred and silent in her mind. It felt like they were the only two people there at that moment in time. She soon came back to reality and quickly rushed over to hug and kiss the man of hear dreams… and shouted yes of course!
Lam and Katie both come from large families and knew that it would be somewhat costly to throw a huge party in the states. As planning progressed they came to realize it became less about the party and more about them and those that have supported their relationship from the very beginning.
When the couple finally decided to do a destination wedding, the first place they looked was the Dominican Republic. Katie’s cousin got married in Punta Cana a few years back and heard it was a beautiful place. They then decided to personally visit Punta Cana and see for themselves. They quickly fell in love with the city and its people. They didn’t, however, find the venue of their dreams. That didn’t happen until they researched online and found Villa Flor de Cabrera in Cabrera, Dominican Republic. With pictures and reviews to support their decision, they set their wedding date for January 14, 2017.
The turquoise waters, tropical flowers, and serene palm trees just gives off a majestic feel. The couple knew this was the type of background they wanted for their wedding. The Dominican Republic promised to be a getaway in paradise!
Their wedding day was everything they could have dreamed of and more. They owe thanks to their Wedding Coordinator, Wilvia, along with the rest of the staff at Villa Flor de Cabrera. Everyone went above and beyond for their wedding and their guests. From morning til night, the day went as smooth as can be. Despite some rain in the earlier part of the day, there was a beaming sun that came out just in time for their ceremony allowing us to shoot spectacular wedding photos. They are also grateful they were able to have Huellas del Caribe – HDC Photo capture every moment of their special day! Can’t thank them enough!
